What are fertility problems?

Infertility is defined as the inability to conceive after a year of continuous sex.  There are several causes of infertility, such as low testosterone and a low sperm count, endometriosis and ovulatory conditions.

There are different categories of infertility, such as the following:

• Primary infertility develops when the couple cannot fall pregnant even after six months or more of unprotected sex.
• Secondary infertility happens when you cannot fall pregnant following a successful pregnancy.
• Unexplained infertility occurs when doctors cannot determine a reason for infertility.

What are the signs of fertility issues?

• Abdominal/pelvic pain
• Inconsistent menstrual cycles
• Abnormal vaginal bleeding
• Trouble with ejaculation
• Penile disorders

How do you diagnose fertility issues?

Gerard Thomas will inquire about your medical and sexual history.  Afterwards, he will order some fertility testing and or refer to a fertility specialist which consists of the following:

• A pelvic exam is an investigative procedure that involves checking the pelvic region for structural issues or potential signs of disease.
• A blood test measures hormonal levels to check whether a hormonal imbalance is the reason for
• A transvaginal ultrasound involves the placement of an ultrasound probe through the vagina to check for problems affecting the female reproductive system.
• Hysteroscopy is the placement of a lighted scope with a camera attached at the end (hysteroscope) through the vagina to inspect the uterus thoroughly.
• Laparoscopy is an investigative procedure that involves inserting a fine tube with a light and camera connected to the end through an incision over the abdominal region. Laparoscopic surgery is done to determine the cause of scar tissue, uterine fibroids and endometriosis.
