Musculoskeletal Conditions and Injuries
What are musculoskeletal conditions and injuries?
Musculoskeletal disorders are conditions that impact certain body components, such as connective tissue, joints, muscles, and bones. They can occur at birth or develop later due to injury.
Musculoskeletal-related disorders include the following:
- Tendinitis arises from joint overuse or strain on the joint, which affects the dense fibrous cords that connect muscle to bone (the tendons). As a result, tendinitis results in pain on the exterior of the joint.
- Carpal tunnel syndrome causes a tingling sensation and pain in the forearm and hand. It occurs when one of the major nerves (the median nerve) becomes compressed as it travels through the wrist.
- Osteoarthritis is a degenerative joint disorder whereby the tissues within the joint degenerate over time. This is a prevalent form of arthritis that commonly affects older people. Usually, with osteoarthritis, you develop pain within the affected joints and stiffness in the joints after a period of inactivity.
- Rheumatoid arthritis is an inflammatory musculoskeletal-related disorder that occurs from an attack by the immune system on healthy cells. This unintentional harm caused by an overactive, hostile immune system can cause painful swelling and inflammation in the joints.
- Fibromyalgia is a condition that causes widespread bodily pain, which is accompanied by difficulty sleeping and lethargy. In addition, those diagnosed with fibromyalgia have a heightened response to pain.
- Bone fractures occur due to excessive force from an external object that causes the bone to break into several pieces. Fractures are considered serious traumatic injuries that take longer to rejuvenate than bone bruises.
What are the signs of musculoskeletal conditions and injuries?
Common signs of musculoskeletal conditions/injuries include the following:
- Lethargy
- Body pain and aches
- Weakness and stiffness in the joints
- Tenderness over the affected region
How do you diagnose musculoskeletal disorders?
Normally, a comprehensive physical examination is done to check for the following:
- Joint pain
- Redness and swelling over the joint
- Atrophy and muscle weakness
Additionally, diagnostic imaging studies such as MRI scans and X-rays are performed to inspect the bones and soft tissues in detail.
How do you treat musculoskeletal conditions?
A holistic treatment plan is based on the extent of your symptoms and the results from the diagnostic tests. Due to the severity of symptoms, doctors prescribe medications to alleviate pain and inflammation.
